Storing Antique and Vintage Textiles

  • When storing old textiles (rugs, sheets of cloth, clothing, etc.) the most important factor in keeping them intact is to avoid damaging factors: moisture, dirt, mildew, extreme temperatures, and light.
  • Flat storage is an option for storing.  This is storage in flat or square boxes. Use boxes that are large enough and have enough room around the edges.  Make sure not to overpack to prevent wrinkles and/or folding.
  • Rolled Storage:
    • Of course, the main go-to for rolled textile storage is a cardboard tube. When using a cardboard tube pad, it with acid-free tissue paper to protect it and keep it from sticking to the edges. Make your own ties by creating strips from cotton or muslin cloth to avoid damage to the rug using pre-made or other types of ties.  Be prepared to use at least 2-3 ties and perhaps make extra just in case.
    • Use a piece of cotton cloth or muslin that has no dye and is breathable to wrap around the textile.  This will add a layer of protection and can help you roll the rug if you’re having difficulty getting started
    • When storing, select an area that is clean, dark, free of moisture, mildew and has a temperate climate.  Climate-controlled storage units are ideal for antique rugs and for antique storage in general.
  • Hanging Storage is usually the best solution for clothing, costumes, and other similar items.  This prevents wrinkling and creases.  Make sure to use a strong, metal clothing rack to hang the clothing on and sturdy, strong hangers.  Don’t overstuff the clothing rack.  Make sure to cover the entire rack and hanging clothes with a muslin dust cover.  Don’t use plastic bags and other short-term clothing covers – these can deteriorate over time and possibly even melt onto the clothing.
  • Clean all clothing items before storing.  Make sure they are fresh and dry.
  • Label and date everything you store for easy reference.
  • Take a photo of items before storing so you can remember what you’ve stored and where it is even if you’re not physically at the unit.
  • When storing, select an area that is clean, dark, free of moisture, mildew and has a temperate climate.  Climate-controlled storage units are ideal for vintage textiles and for antique storage in general.
  • Make at least a yearly check of your textiles.
  • Always use acid free materials to cover and protect your antique textiles.
  • INSURE your items when storing.  Personal storage insurance is an easy and affordable way to protect the value of your precious items.  It is the smart thing to do.  You can find information about this with the local manager or on Keylockstorage.com
