Antique Rug Storage

When it comes to storing and moving rugs, there is a simply rule of thumb to keep in mind – roll it!

Leaving premium and antique rugs un-rolled, folded or flat can leave them open to fold lines, stains or even tearing.  The older the rug – the more careful you should be.  Antique Rug Storage Tips:

  • Of course, the main go-to for rolled rug storage is a cardboard tube. When using a cardboard tube pad, it with acid-free tissue paper to protect it and keep it from sticking to the edges. Make your own ties by creating strips from cotton or muslin cloth to avoid damage to the rug using pre-made or other types of ties.  Be prepared to use at least 2-3 ties and perhaps make extra just in case.
  • Use a piece of cotton cloth or muslin that has no dye and is breathable to wrap around the rug.  This will add a layer of protection and can help you roll the rug if you’re having difficulty getting started
  • When storing, select an area that is clean, dark, free of moisture, mildew and has a temperate climate.  Climate-controlled storage units are ideal for antique rugs and for antique storage in general.
  • Avoid metal shelving that can rust or wooden shelves or drawers that are un-sealed prior to the storage.
