Antique Map Storage

Rare and antique maps can be some of the most exciting collector’s items in antiques. These, however, can also be the most fragile and prone to decay. Antique and rare maps can yellow, are often very brittle and are easily damaged and stained.

  • It is recommended that maps are stored in a low light area, lying flat, with low humidity, and in an acid free container.
  • Ideally, you should use acid free gloves every time you handle your antique map.
  • Do not store in attics or basements that are more prone to extreme temperatures. Maps should not be stored above 70 degrees Fahrenheit; below 70 degrees is your ideal temperature with humidity below 60 percent but more than 40 percent for antique map storage.
  • Do not store in attics or basement or in the way of direct sunlight. UV rays are harmful to the paper's fiber and glass only protects some UV rays.
  • Store map flat and never fold or roll. Make sure the map is always covered in appropriate non-acid and breathable cotton or other cover made specifically for antique maps.
  • INSURE your items when storing. Personal storage insurance is an easy and affordable way to protect the value of your precious items. It is the smart thing to do. You can find information about this with the local manager or on Keylockstorage.com
  • Be careful of light and heat.  Antique and rare maps should never be stored in a place above 70 degrees and they should be well protected against UV rays which are highly damaging to antique maps.  Glass protects against some UV rays but will not sustain the antique map against all UV damage.
  • If you find a tear or crease in your map your first option should be to have it professionally repaired.  If you cannot do this, try specialty acid free tape but nothing else for care and antique map storage.
